Bottom Line: Where do I even begin? I am fan of the Evil Dead movies. They are gory, campy, comedic, yet terrifying movies. New movie adaptations don’t tend to go over well, failing to live up to the precedent of those that came before. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised (or is it horrified?) with Evil Dead Rise. The story was great, the acting is real, and all of the effects, from visual to sound, are immersive and effective. I wasn’t sure an Evil Dead movie could exist without the indominable Bruce Campbell at the helm. I am happy to be proved wrong. Alyssa Sutherland as the main “deadite” was a joy and a terror to watch. I don’t think I will be able to get her smile out of my nightmares for quite some time. Lastly, I appreciate it tried to be its own version of Evil Dead, while also paying homage to the classics. Whether you are a fan of the series or a fan of horror, this is a must-watch horror movie experience. I recommend only watching after the sun has gone down, and preferrably with another friend (or two) who enjoy scary movies. Not for the weak of heart, or stomach.

UnReel Category: Body Horror - There are scenes that will 100% make you recoil, shiver, spasm, all of the above. Very visceral, very well done.
Food Pairing: I watched this movie while eating a jalapeno and pepperoni pizza, covered with crushed red peppers. The spiciness of the pizza was a perfect pair with the spiciness of the resurrected deadites.
Drink Pairing: This was a whiskey and coke movie all the way. I went with Maker’s Mark and Coke. It helps if it is a little lighter on the coke.
