Year: 2022

Listed Genre: Adventure, Drama, War

Listed Summary: A man’s story of leaving New York in 1967 to bring beer to his childhood buddies in the Army while they are fighting in Vietnam.

The UnReel Take:

Bottom Line: This film tells the true story of a New York merchant marine, Chickie Donohue, who has been watching the Vietnam War from his local bar while his neighborhood friends are off fighting there. After a funeral for one friend, he gets the idea to bring them all a beer from home. After sailing into Saigon with a duffle bag full of PBR, Chickie spends a few days adventuring through Vietnam’s war zones, seeking out his friends and receiving a few less than warm welcomes. His outlook on the war evolves the more he is exposed to it. This movie is entertaining and I appreciated the honest look at the war and how confusing it would have been to everyday USA as really the first war reported in real-time.

UnReel AR: 7.5

UnReel Category: ActionCom - While not strictly a comedy there are some hilarious parts that will leave you doubled over. The action is spread throughout the film and won’t overwhelm you or drown out the story.

Food Pairing: Get yourself a New York style street dog, or really anything that reminds you of the neighborhood.

Drink Pairing: There’s only one thing you can have with this one, PBR. Preferably cold but if you’re going for realism then leave it warm and bang up the cans as if they traveled 7,000 miles in a duffle bag.
