Year: 2012

Listed Genre: Crime, Drama

Listed Summary: Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a trio of bootlegging brothers are threatened by a new special deputy and other authorities angling for a cut of their profits.

The UnReel Take:

Bottom Line: If you are a fan of under appreciated performances, look no further. I can pretty much say I enjoy any performance put on by Tom Hardy, and he doesn’t disappoint as a tough “hill country” bootlegger. Shia also gives a commendable performance as the “I have something to prove” youngest brother. The story is pretty straightforward, and the strong acting keeps your attention. If you are looking for a depression era crime movie in the vein of Peaky Blinders, this one will probably scratch the itch.

UnReel AR: 7.5

UnReel Category: Crime Time - Watch with friends who enjoy these types of movies. Not everyone is down with the depression era crime/mobster genre.

Food Pairing: Barbecue chicken with some mashed taters would really hit the spot with this movie.

Drink Pairing: The obvious answer here is, watch this movie with some moonshine! Of course, you probably don’t have access to the “real deal,” so if that is the case, try some of the next best thing from a brand called American Born Moonshine. Should be able to find in most liquor stores.
